Six Days to Go

Inspirational song: Anticipation (Carly Simon)

We were at the house again today. It gets harder to leave it and go back to the apartment every time we are there. Six days left to wait. We close Tuesday morning, and we are even considering renting a trailer Monday night, filling it with all the boxes shoved in the apartment closets, and showing up to the closing ready to unload the first handful. I had to talk the Mister out of going ahead and putting the dogs in the back of the truck for closing. They don't need to be left there if closing takes hours.

This was the third roofing company to look at the house to prepare a bid. This guy didn't pull punches and pretend it wasn't a mess up there. We were a little put off by the last guy's poker face. It wasn't until today that we were sure guy #2 took the broken trusses seriously. He does, but he hid it well the day we spoke. There are major structural defects in that roof, but hopefully one of these three companies will come in and make it safe enough for us to live under when the snows come in a few months.

I had no real tasks at the house today, so I just went to see how the garden was coming along after we weeded last week and a big rainstorm blew through yesterday. The ground was squishy as hell, but things seem to be thriving where they have suddenly acquired extra space. There are tiny little basil plants that I am encouraging to expand, and the little tomatoes that seemed to be volunteers from last year are finally getting tall enough to flower. I'm still planning on cooking a huge pot of kale the night we unpack the kitchen, from the garden. And where we thought all of the raspberries were first year canes that wouldn't bear fruit this season, we may have been wrong. There are tiny little buds all over the tips of the canes. I have one sunflower that has a giant face that will bear seeds a - plenty for eating and growing next year. It might just be enough to tide me over until next year when I can plant early in the season. As an aside, does anyone have a really good recipe for choke cherry jam?
