Subject: Progress Report for DNPX-17 Trials

Frederick:

I need an update from you ASAP on DNPX-17. The deadline is a week from tomorrow for your final report. I need to update the board this afternoon on where we stand. I see no reason to delay the submission of the NDA, so that we can get this to market in the next cycle.

Cindy's emails were unusually terse and inelegant for a woman whose job depended on her ability to communicate complex concepts to investors and marketers. She was not a scientist herself. She was a woman who knew how to lead a team and to convince other non-scientists to part with large sums of money. The difference in her ability to talk to the board of directors versus someone like Frederick was the absolute lack of interest she had in anyone who wasn't pouring large sums of cash into the furtherance of her career. The longer she stayed in this business, however, the less she wanted to continue doing it. She felt her skills were wasted in pharmaceuticals. There was plenty of money here, but no excitement. It only really got interesting when they passed that threshold over which the approved drugs started to appear on late night television ads for law firms who wanted to sue over side effects. Cindy had a nose for it--for knowing exactly where to draw the line before the company's exposure was too great. She had a calculus for lawsuits and damages that kept her division profitable quarter after quarter, year after year. This was why a non-scientist like Cindy was in the position she held. NPS, LLC did everything it took to keep her around.
