For a week, the front yard held a pit of despair. It was dug two feet down, to pick out every visible root of the bindweed. Over the last two days, the hole was filled in, covered with mulch, and the giant rocks that had been piled up for two years were finally placed where they were intended to go. We now have about two thirds of a mound built up. Most of the bedding plants placed in it so far are annuals. Only a few perennials have gone in so far, and I'm good with that. I want to see how the dirt settles and how big it ends up, after we go on a few more rock-hunting expeditions. When it is done, it should have a thick coat of sturdy, shrubby flowers and some trailing succulents on the rocks. The whole idea is to deflect and diffuse the road noise coming in off the secondary artery street that locals treat as a speedway. It will take years for the entire project to be done, ripping out all traces of grass (and with it all the bindweed and creeping bellflower). We are in negotiations over what sort of picket fence will go along the front boundary, to complete the noise reduction effort. I want a more traditional look, with the gaps filled by irises and roses, and he wants the same flowers, but with a tight, offset picket placement. Couldn't guess at this point who will win.
