Changes in Altitude, Changes in Attitude

Inspirational song: Rocky Mountain High (John Denver)

It's all fun and games until someone loses money again. And don't I always lose money? Oddly, I'm so used to it by now that I'm okay with it. But I should back up a little first.

I mentioned yesterday that I was only concerned with surviving through last night. I made it, with energy to spare. Today was a pre-planned celebration of that accomplishment. I got a national parks pass for my birthday, and I have been itching to use it for months. Today I needed a break from my usual life, and the weather was stunningly perfect. I saw my chance and I took it. I was the one steering the vehicle up to and through Rocky Mountain National Park, as far up as I could go before the road was closed. (Trail Ridge usually opens around Memorial Day, and although it has been really warm, that date hasn't moved up this far yet.) I only pulled over for photos a few times, when it was really compelling. Mostly I just enjoyed the ride. When I did get out of the car, it was a vacation for my senses. We stopped in an area that was heavily wooded, and it smelled fantastic. It wasn't a long tour of the Park, but it was critically necessary. By the time we drove away from Estes a couple of hours later, I was feeling much more relaxed, and ready to take another crack at life. Well, almost ready.

We were almost to the turn to Ward and Nederland, the alternate route back down the mountain we had already selected, when I suddenly turned all red and jumped on the Mr's shoulder to whisper in his ear, "Let's go throw 40 bucks away." I didn't have to twist his arm too much. We drove a little further south, to detour through the casino. The machines that had previously been so good to him and so mediocre to me were pretty horrendous to us both, so we split up and wandered around looking for new screens to watch. He found a giant Game of Thrones themed one where he stayed the whole time we were there this afternoon, and he ended up in positive territory. I bounced around several that slowly but steadily took my money. In the grand scheme of things, I only lost 18 dollars, net. Probably should have stopped when I was up by the same amount, but you know how it goes. You always think you can win it back when it starts to slide.
