Crime Fraud

Inspirational song: Turning Japanese (The Vapors)

Been wondering what to say about this one. Apparently last summer, when I had the rental advertised on Zillow, someone thought it would be a good idea to incorporate an import-export business under what they assumed was the address of a vacant house. The place rented in July, and this business incorporated in August. In the fall, the renters brought over a stack of mail that wasn't for them, and I sent a photo of the envelopes to the house owner. I asked if there was anything he wanted forwarded, or opened and scanned. He didn't recognize this one thing that looked like a government document, and so we looked at what was inside. It was something about a massive import of vape cartridges, being held for inspection. We thought it was a fluke or a scam pretending to be official and laughed it off.

A month later, there were more of these invoices or whatever. We didn't open them, just marked return to sender, and put them out for the letter carrier to take away. Since then, there has been a giant avalanche of this stuff. We researched the name, and discovered when they incorporated, and the foreign name on the registration. The owners of the house contacted the Colorado secretary of state, and found that this is such a common occurrence that there's a standard form on their website to file a complaint about it. They did that, but nothing changed. They called again, and were advised to just keep returning to sender.

In the last month, there has been so much mail that the renter has been bringing over bricks of it, rubber-banded together. I filled a reusable Walmart bag with them today, and went to the auxilliary post office in the Ace hardware to see if they could stamp them or return them en masse. They said please go to the main post office and have them put a stop on delivery to that name. I did that immediately after, and I hope that this will finally stop the deluge for the renters. What the government will do when almost a cubic foot of envelopes all to the same address gets dumped on them, I can't say. My guess is not much.

All I can say is if customs is coming after them for as much in fees or penalties as it appears, to a faked address, I don't think it's just nicotine vape juice they're importing. And we want nothing to do with this nonsense.
