When you live so close to gorgeous mountains, you really must take advantage of them, even if it's last minute or you barely feel up to going out. Both of those factors were in play for me today, but out we went. We picked up the kids around 10:30 this morning and went for a long, long drive. We mostly stayed in Boulder County, or very close to it, for the drive, and we explored side roads I haven't seen in years, or some never at all. We stopped several times to get out and stretch our legs, and once to eat at a mountain restaurant that has been in existence for over a hundred years. Still, with all the breaks, we vastly overestimated Dmitri's tolerance for mountain driving. Once he wore out, he was nearly inconsolable. I think it was a combination of fatigue, discomfort, sun in his eyes, and worst of all, pressure in his ears from gaining and losing thousands of feet of altitude rapidly. Poor kiddo. He will need to learn these skills to keep up with his sister and grandpa.
