Asking me to keep a secret from my blog is like asking a river to flow uphill. You might capture the illusion of success for a while, but eventually the cover is blown. Astute readers may have noticed in photos that my daughter appeared to gain a little weight around the middle, but obviously all of you are too polite and well-mannered to comment on it. Yes, indeed, there was a new Smith under production, and today was the big reveal.
How many of you are old enough to remember the commercial for a long-distance phone company (or heck, to remember having to pay extra for long-distance!) where the young man made a collect call (remember those too?) and he announced his name as Bob Wehadababyitsaboy? Well, that is what greeted us in group chat this morning. It's a boy! And damn, if they didn't melt my grinchy heart by naming him using my initials! All day long we have been getting photos and videos of Avery Reynolds Smith. Valerie is already calling out that she loves him in video chats. Dmitri is going to be a serious big brother now--for the last several weeks, he pointed at mommy's enormous tummy and said "butt." Well, tonight he looked at Avery in the chat and said "butt" again. Yeah, brotherly love.
We get to go meet him in the morning. Today was all about new parent bonding time, and my daughter getting all the medical care she needs from a c-section. I'm glad they are being very considerate of her, making sure she has no pain, and is safe and doing well. She also is getting way more maternity leave than I ever did when she was born. Thank goodness for civilized laws recently passed in Colorado. We are attempting to join the rest of the developed world. If only the rest of the country would wise up the same way. Rest, heal, bond, and grow that little boy. He is our future.
