Seeing the pictures from baby's first picnic were all the inspiration we needed to say yes immediately when we were invited to her second. We met up with the kids at a park along a nearby lake and sat on a blanket and ate sandwiches, living the dream. It was all kinds of delightful. Saoirse came with us too, having been assigned homework on her first day of high school to go with me everywhere and practice greeting people calmly. We all had a great time, even though it was particularly sunny today (not my usual going-out weather).
We had a great conversation and meal, but honestly, the star of the show was Val. She bounced between us, getting cuddles and snacks, and telling us all kinds of comments about how much fun she was having. No real words, but she got her point across. At one point, she was so distracted by a Frito I handed her that she forgot to hold on to me and stood under her own power for a good five seconds. I had a panicky moment trying to get everyone else to look at her without startling her into falling. I think she does better on uneven ground than flat floors. She has to use her feet to grip, and she balances better. We can use this knowledge for our advantage, to get her ready to walk soon.
She got to touch water that wasn't in a bathtub, when mommy and grandpa took her down to the lake edge. It was far too cold to dip a toe in, but they held her and let her reach out a hand. She also had a blast swinging in the baby swing, and we took a few videos for posterity. This was took good an experience not to repeat. I suspect it won't be long before we are back at it.
Oh, and watching her feed herself, we have decided to call cheese slices "milk paper." If I use that in the future, you'll know where it came from.
