Here it is, a week after I put the tree up, and I haven't put any ornaments on it yet. While my daughter and I both have wistfully pondered not doing any decorating beyond twinkle lights, I knew I didn't want to do that this year.
This week I cut up two oranges, and dried them out in the oven, as a little experiment. I pulled them out before they were super dry, and I let them sit on a paper towel to firm up. Tonight, I sat down with some fine hemp twine and a fat tapestry needle, and strung them into a loose garland, interspersed with fresh cranberries. I had enough to make two garlands, each a couple meters long. So far they are the only things on the tree, but I'm enjoying the simple touch they provide.
Nearly every morning I watch one of my favorite gardening youtubers first thing, when I sit down with coffee. The channel is Dig, Plant, Water, Repeat, by a woman named Janey from Davis, California. She is currently trying new content, while she is laid up from foot surgery, and this morning she made a video where her gardening friends submitted clips of their own houses, showing off their Christmas trees. Two of them used dried flowers that they grew to decorate their trees, and they were stunning. I had not considered doing that before. But now I'm thinking, well, I know that my yarrow patch dried really well. I wonder what else is out there I could use. Some rose hips? I don't think I have good hydrangea blooms, but maybe there is one that survived. I'll look tomorrow to see what would work.
