Inspirational song: God Save the Queen

The established rule is to denote who performed the inspirational song, which version if there are covers, or what musical it's from if appropriate. This time, I leave it up to my audience. Depending on your perspective or preference, it can be what people in Britain sing in all seriousness, or the heavy guitar instrumental the rock band Queen included on one of their albums, or the punk anthem by the Sex Pistols. Choose your adventure.

It was obvious from the first moment this morning when I heard the news that the royal family was gathering around the bedside of the Queen in Scotland that this was the end. I was neither dismayed nor giddy. I just accepted that this 96 year old woman, who was the longest-serving monarch in her country's history, had run her race and it was time to let her go. I have heard reactions that span a wide view of the monarchy. I fall in a neutral middle. I saw someone on Twitter put it perfectly for me: I don't like change and I quite like grandmas. So I will watch the news with a quiet respect for this monumental occasion.

We were with the kids tonight, playing a game at their house. Valerie mostly did her own thing, only occasionally asking to read a book or sit on a lap. Dmitri went back and forth from being charming to being inconsolable. At one point I had set him on his busy mat, and he studied one of the dangling toys, with an expression that became increasingly pugilistic. I wonder what he was thinking.
